FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, June 24, 2022 – The Institute for Women’s Health (IWH) celebrates the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. It is a remarkable victory for our constitutional right to life and for the protection of women’s health. This ruling affirms what the Institute for Women’s Health has always held to be true – abortion is not a fundamental human right internationally nor in the U.S. – and is neither explicitly nor implicitly included in the Constitution.
While this is a massive legal win for the pro-life movement in the U.S., this decision will have a significant effect throughout the world. Just as IWH supports returning abortion legislative power to the 50 U.S. states, we also support the sovereign right of nation-states to determine their own laws regarding abortion without interference from the U.S. or other progressive allied nations. We expect the Biden administration to continue imposing their radical abortion agenda across the globe, but IWH is optimistic the SCOTUS decision will empower nations to stand more firmly and confidently in their efforts to promote women’s health while defending life at every stage.
We ask that this administration stop its ideological colonialism, and we call upon Congress to ensure that the U.S. government stays within the legal guardrails of both the Helms and Siljander Amendments – which prohibit foreign assistance or advocacy to pressure a country to change its abortion laws. In the meantime, IWH remains committed to the advancement of health for women, in the U.S. and around the world.
